iDevAffiliate question

in General edited October 2009
I get that most people are using this software. I've pitched this to my client and he's making a choice.

What I don't get yet is this. How does FoxyCart know the affiliate ID that gets passed to iDevAffiliate? This is not clear to me as of yet.

If there's a built-in affiliate option with FoxyCart please let me know. I haven't seen this yet.

  • This code is featured in the FoxyCart wiki. I just see nowhere that the affiliate's ID or code is passed. That said, how in the world does iDevAffiliate know to give Joe Referrer the sales commission for the items sold?

    Hi ashworth102680.

    Essentially, in iDev or most other affiliate tracking systems/networks, the inbound link that your affiliates use are special links that set a cookie with the inbound traffic before sending it on to the landing page on your site. When the "tagged" traffic then checks out, the iDev code on the receipt reads the cookie and and if it exists determines if the sales should credit an affiliate. So the non-obvious part is the cookie in the referred traffic's browser. (Also the somewhat hidden [url=http://www.idevkb.com/questions/46/Documentation+Found+In+iDevAffiliate .]iDev Documentation[/url] might be helpful, too.)

    And example of the code you could use on your receipt page would be something like:
    ^^receipt_only_begin^^<img border="0" src="https://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/idevaffiliate/sale.php?idev_saleamt=^^order_total^^&idev_ordernum=^^order_id^^"; width="1" height="1">^^receipt_only_end^^

    Note that the "receipt_only" codes are important, as otherwise the tracking code will re-trigger whenever a customer re-reviews their receipt. (I updated the wiki to reflect that, as well.)

    Does that help a little?
  • Absolutely! The PHP include into the image tag reads the cookie. I'm a PHP dev and not super strong with Javascript so far. This helps a ton.

    Where does the image tag get placed and how? This may be perfect for what they want.
  • Do you recommend using their hosting service as the most seamless way to get this setup?
  • As far as placing that code, yes, it would go near the end of your receipt template (configured in the foxycart portal), but within the body tag.

    For iDev hosting, I'm not really sure. Perhaps someone else here actively uses their service -- we've demo'd iDev and it seems to work just fine, but we run most of our programs on via affiliate networks like ShareASale or Commission Junction. (The networks will do a lot of the day-to-day work for you, like pay your affiliates, but they also charge 20-30% on top of your affiliate payouts.)

    For iDev just keep in mind that wherever it's hosted, foxycart must be able to call the tracking code from a secure/https location. I'm pretty sure idevwebhost.com includes this, but you'll want to be sure.

    I'd actually recommend the hosted version if it's an option, as it'll just avoid headaches, and you won't have to worry about upgrades or SSL or etc.

    Also, worth noting is that many systems (iDev included) rely on IP addresses as well as cookies. This is useful if cookies are lost or prevented (as 3rd party cookies sometimes are). Most systems do attempt to track across at least cookies and IP addresses though, to ensure that sales are credited where appropriate.
  • Ahojte,

    chcela som sa do iDev Affiliate registrovať, no bezúspešne. Vyplnený formulár mi nejde odoslať. Vie mi niekto poradiť? Vopred ďakujem, krásny deň i víkend prajem :)

    @uzivatelka:

    According to Google Translate:
    I wanted to iDev Affiliate register, but without success. The completed form does not send me. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance, a wonderful day and weekend wish

    Were you trying to register at http://affiliate.foxycart.com/ or are you talking about just iDev Affiliate for your own use? If so, you should contact them for support.
  • I'm just an affiliate program. It was not me or contact support, I tried - form remained standing in place. : ( Nice weekend :)

    @uzivatelka,

    Could you please link to the page that has the form that's not working for you? Sorry - I think we're getting our wires mixed in translations

    @billem,

    Yes it can, there is some details on our wiki's integrations page about getting things connected: http://wiki.foxycart.com/integration/start
