Downloadable Product with "Name Your Price"?

Hey there..

So, using the instructions for "custom prices" I was able to make products with a "name your own price" field, like:
http://rtb.dennisyang.com/products/non-anonymous-coward/

It works great.. EXCEPT for products that are downloadable. When associated with a downloadable product, the price automagically flips back to the price that I put in the FoxyCart admin interface that is used to create the downloadable product.

For example -- no matter what you enter for price here:
http://rtb.dennisyang.com/products/approaching-infinity-digital/

It always comes in as $0.00 (the price I put in the price field in FoxyCart) -- Is there a way to enter "no price" for this? And have the price be set by the user in the custom price field?

Thanks
dennis

    Hey Dennis. At this point, no, since it would allow people to spoof the price and download something without paying for it. One option (depending on how you want to do things) would be to add two products at once to the cart, one being the free downloadable and the other being a non shippable product that can be priced by the customer. Would that work for you? Or you could go the self-hosted route: http://wiki.foxycart.com/integration/foxycart/self_hosted_downloads

    @dennis,

    If you wanted to keep the downloadable hosted by FoxyCart, you could also leave the downloadable as free but add a second product that is added with it to the cart with an editable price field so people can then add a donation to go with the product.
  • Aha.. thanks guys -- I had made a different Foxy_Cart category that sends a custom email with a different URL, in preparation of me hosting the download myself -- so, it's awesome that there's already support for self_hosted_downloads -- I think that's the solution I'm going to go with.

    Thanks for the super fast response!!

    I had recently adapted the self-hosted script to allow files to be served from an Amazon S3 bucket and had been meaning to post my code and your post reminded me to do that. So I have posted version 0.3.0 with the Amazon S3 support included in case anyone wants to serve their self-hosted files from Amazon.
